Professional timeline

November 2001 – May 2003 | Hospital experience in the United Kingdom

Worked as a House Officer (HO) and Senior House Officer (SHO) at several hospitals, including in Weston-super-Mare, Swindon and Gloucester. His experience covered medical and surgical departments, with particular and repeated involvement in Accident & Emergency: initial assessment of acutely unwell patients, prioritisation, diagnostic assessment, treatment and stabilisation, admission, discharge or specialist referral as required. While working in the United Kingdom, he held full registration with the General Medical Council, obtained on 24 September 2001.

July 2003 – November 2004 | 118 pre-hospital emergency service and emergency departments in Naples

Worked in the 118 pre-hospital emergency service and in the emergency departments of several hospitals in Naples, including San Giovanni Bosco and Loreto Mare. His work included pre-hospital patient assessment and stabilisation, prioritisation, arranging transport and, in hospital, differential diagnosis and initial treatment of major medical and surgical emergencies.

January 2009 – January 2011 | Vascular and interventional radiology

Specialist work at Ospedale dei Pellegrini in Naples as a vascular and interventional radiologist. This experience strengthened his integration of clinical assessment, diagnostic imaging, selection of appropriate indications, planning of minimally invasive image-guided procedures and clinical and imaging follow-up, in collaboration with medical and surgical specialists.

January – December 2011 | Observational clinical research

Principal investigator of a non-profit observational study involving patients with multiple sclerosis and chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI), reviewed and approved by an ethics committee. Responsibilities included implementing the protocol, patient selection and enrolment, coordinating clinical and imaging assessments, prospective data collection, monitoring outcomes and scheduled follow-up.

July 2011 – present | Centro Medico Gargano

Private practice in Naples as a specialist in diagnostic radiology, with a particular focus on vascular diagnostics, clinical angiology and phlebology. His work includes arterial and venous colour duplex ultrasound, haemodynamic assessment of chronic venous insufficiency, assessment of varicose veins, thrombosis, venous ulcers, lymphoedema and lipoedema, minimally invasive venous treatments, and clinical and ultrasound follow-up.

Scientific work and research methodology

His experience as principal investigator involved applying a prospective protocol with scheduled follow-up and strengthening his skills in clinical research methodology: selection criteria, enrolment, systematic data collection, organisation of assessments, documentation of clinical events and monitoring of outcomes.

The CCSVI study was observational: without randomisation or a control group, a causal relationship between a procedure and changes in clinical outcomes cannot automatically be established. This distinction is essential for accurate scientific communication and to avoid presenting clinical observations as evidence of efficacy.

For an up-to-date and cautious discussion of this topic, see CCSVI: clinical experience, diagnosis and the current evidence.

Verifiable qualifications and credentials

Professional registration. Registration with the Italian Medical Register can be checked in the official FNOMCeO national register, searching for Gargano, Ciro, province of Napoli. Registration number: 29460.

Professional registration in the United Kingdom. The public General Medical Council profile (GMC reference 6033493) documents the full registration obtained on 24 September 2001. The public registration history, available from 20 October 2005, shows Registered until 11 May 2006 and, from that date, Not Registered – Administrative Reason. The individual record does not specify which administrative requirement led to this status. Dr Gargano explains that, after ending his professional work in the United Kingdom, he chose not to maintain registration or pay the annual GMC fee because registration was no longer required for his practice in Italy. This registration is not currently active and does not authorise him to practise medicine in the United Kingdom today.

Academic qualifications. The universities, dates and marks shown on this page are taken from his AlmaLaurea CV and academic documents. No AlmaLaurea link is included because a verified, stable public URL for his individual profile is not available; authenticated or session-specific addresses are not permanent public sources.

Clarification of qualifications. “Angiology”, “phlebology” and “vascular and interventional radiology” describe areas of professional practice; his formally awarded university specialist qualification is in Diagnostic Radiology.

Professional profile updated on 2 September 2026. Qualification details are presented in a documentable form; clinical information on this website is for information and does not replace an individual medical assessment.
