Hyaluronic acid fillers in Naples: indications and safety

Hyaluronic acid fillers in Naples: what are they?

Here are 10 useful facts about hyaluronic acid fillers in Naples and their use in aesthetic medicine: Hyaluronic acid fillers can correct selected wrinkles and restore facial volume. Results and duration depend on the product, treatment area and individual. The natural occurrence of hyaluronic acid does not make an injection risk-free: swelling and bruising can occur, as can rare but serious complications such as blockage of a blood vessel. A doctor may use hyaluronidase to break down some hyaluronic acid fillers, but this does not guarantee that every complication can be reversed.

  • 1. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the human body (it is actually a sugar!) that acts like a sponge, absorbing water. It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water, making it an excellent moisturiser.
  • 2. Versatile use: Hyaluronic acid fillers have many uses in aesthetic medicine, including lip enhancement, filling facial wrinkles and adding volume to the cheeks.
  • 3. Safety: Hyaluronic acid fillers can also cause adverse reactions and complications. Product selection and medical assessment are essential. For more information about the risks of dermal fillers, see the FDA information on dermal fillers.
  • 4. Temporary results: Hyaluronic acid filler treatments produce temporary results. Depending on the area treated and the specific product used, results may last from 6 to 18 months.
  • 5. Non-surgical correction: Hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to correct a variety of aesthetic concerns without surgery.
  • 6. Biocompatibility: Most hyaluronic acid fillers are non-animal in origin and biocompatible, so skin testing is rarely needed before use.
  • 7. Minimally invasive procedure: Hyaluronic acid filler treatment is non-surgical and minimally invasive, often requiring little or no recovery time.
  • 8. Individual treatment: The doctor can tailor treatment to the patient’s age, skin structure, aesthetic needs and desired volume.
  • 9. Possibility of dissolution: A doctor may use hyaluronidase to break down some hyaluronic acid fillers. The outcome depends on the product and clinical situation; it does not ensure that all unwanted effects or complications can be fully reversed.
  • 10. Use in ophthalmology: Before its use in aesthetic medicine, hyaluronic acid was used in ophthalmology, particularly during cataract surgery.

Facial fillers: cheekbones and temples for a natural-looking lifting effect

Softening the nasolabial folds, which run from the sides of the nose towards the mouth, is one of the most frequent requests. Over time, the loss and redistribution of facial fat and remodelling of the bony support in the cheekbone area, together with tissue laxity and gravity, can make these folds more pronounced.

Fillers in the cheekbones or temples are considered to restore lost volume and improve facial harmony. In the temples, they can soften the hollowed appearance sometimes referred to as “skeletonisation”; in the cheekbones, they can restore support and definition. The aim is a natural-looking visual smoothing effect. Improvement in the nasolabial folds varies from person to person and is not automatic.

The value of this approach lies in understanding anatomy and the changes associated with ageing: distributing volume in the appropriate areas while avoiding further heaviness in the midface or excessive projection, the so-called “tapir effect”.

More structured hyaluronic acid fillers are used, selected according to the treatment area. When appropriate for the product and the anatomy, placement is deep, including in the supraperiosteal plane, above the tissue covering the bone. The amount and technique are tailored to the individual.

Results may last up to 12 months and, with some products and in some people, longer. The result is temporary and is not equivalent to a surgical facelift.

Radiesse® for hand rejuvenation in Naples

The hands, along with the neck, are among the areas where signs of ageing can become particularly visible. Volume loss on the backs of the hands makes veins and tendons more noticeable and can give the hands a more hollow appearance. At Centro Medico Gargano in Naples, Radiesse® treatment for the hands is considered according to the skin’s characteristics, volume loss and the person’s goals.

Before and after: a clinical case at one month

The photographs show the patient’s hands before treatment and at the one-month follow-up. In the comparison, the backs of the hands appear fuller and the contours of veins and tendons are less pronounced. The patient reported satisfaction with the result.

Radiesse and hyaluronic acid: what are the differences?

Radiesse does not contain hyaluronic acid. It consists of synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a water-based gel containing carboxymethylcellulose and glycerine. Calcium hydroxylapatite is similar to the mineral component found in bones and teeth. The product has a characteristic white, opaque appearance.

Hyaluronic acid fillers retain water and are used to restore volume and correct selected wrinkles. Radiesse combines the initial support provided by the gel with progressive stimulation of collagen production by fibroblasts. It is used to correct volume loss on the backs of the hands and for certain facial indications. The choice of product depends on the area and medical assessment: the products are not interchangeable in every location.

Hyaluronic acid and Radiesse: practical differences
FeatureHyaluronic acidRadiesse®
Calcium hydroxylapatite
Main effectRestores volume, softens selected wrinkles and retains water in the tissues. The formulation is chosen according to the area and desired result.Provides tissue support and progressively stimulates collagen production, contributing to contour definition and skin firmness.
ReversibilityCan be reduced with hyaluronidase, when medically indicated. Dissolving it does not guarantee complete reversal of the result or of any complications. It is resorbable, but does not dissolve with hyaluronidase. It does not have the same dissolution mechanism available for hyaluronic acid fillers.
Areas of useLips, wrinkles and volume in the cheeks, cheekbones and chin, depending on the product. The tear trough may be considered in selected cases, using appropriate formulations.Cheeks, deep folds, jawline and backs of the hands, depending on formulation and indication. The neck requires a dedicated assessment: use may be off-label.
Areas and precautionsNo product is suitable for every area without distinction. The nose, glabella and eye contour require particular caution because of the vascular anatomy. It is not a choice for the lips or eye contour. The instructions for use also exclude the nose and glabella.
Indicative durationAround 6–12 months in many applications; it may last longer depending on the product, location and individual response.Approximately 12–18 months, depending on location and protocol. For the hands, benefit has been documented at 12 months. The result is not permanent.

These durations are approximate and do not guarantee the same result for everyone. Indications and product choice depend on medical assessment.

Which treatment should you choose?

Hyaluronic acid may be chosen to restore fullness to depleted tissues and treat soft features such as the lips; when needed, it can be reduced with hyaluronidase after medical assessment, without a guarantee of complete reversibility. Radiesse may be indicated to support and define facial contours and progressively improve skin firmness through collagen stimulation. The choice depends on anatomy, the area and the treatment goal.

How hand treatment is performed

At our practice, the product is introduced under the skin using a cannula, after applying an anaesthetic cream to reduce discomfort. Sensitivity varies from patient to patient. Pain, swelling or bruising may occur during and after the procedure; nodules and other complications are also possible and are discussed during the consultation.

How long do Radiesse results last on the hands?

Improvement may be maintained at 12 months, as documented in studies on the hands, but duration is not the same for everyone. This is not a permanent treatment. Suitability for treatment, the result and any need for further sessions are assessed during the consultation and subsequent follow-ups.
